Building Women Back Up

Building Women Back Up

How many amazing female leaders have we lost because they were harassed or bullied at work? And what if we could help those women to heal from the experience and develop their confidence and leadership abilities? How could we change the culture of work if the people leading organizations wouldn't tolerate these behaviors?

Depending on the study you read, anywhere between 30% and 80% of women have experienced harassment and/or bullying in the workplace. When a person is targeted, the experience can impact their ability to self-manage, causing them to doubt their own competence and worth. That means that ending the bullying and harassment is just the first part of the problem - after that, the target needs to build themselves back up or the impact of the incident will follow them around for years.

The goal of The Empowerment Project is to provide women who have been a target of toxic workplace behavior with the information, connections, and mentorship to help them empower themselves, grow their confidence, and develop their leadership abilities.

It's a deeply personal mission

It's a deeply personal mission

My name is Dr. Karlyn Borysenko and I'm an organizational psychologist and coach, and have put together many successful programs and approaches to help create better work experiences through Zen Workplace. I've also written a book that will help people to empower themselves at work using mindfulness techniques called Zen Your Work.

The Empowerment Project is a deeply personal mission. I spent my doctoral studies researching toxic work environments and have coached countless women through them. But I started this work from a place of profound vulnerability, which I share in the video.

We all have a choice - we can be angry about the things that have happened to us, and the broader events of our times, or we can work to solve them. I believe that anyone who has the ability to make an impact has nothing short of an ethical obligation to. The Empowerment Project is my tangible commitment. Q&A

Q&A

What exactly is The Empowerment Project?

The Empowerment Project will be a program for women who have been a target of bullying or harassment at work to help them rebuild their confidence, find their voice, rediscover their value, and cultivate their leadership abilities. It will be conducted virtually, so that participants can join from anywhere, and include facilitation myself, as well as other guest lecturers and mentors. The content of the program is under development and will be made public as it becomes available.

How can I sign up for it?

The application will launch in early 2019. For now, the best thing to do is join the mailing list to be notified when the application is live.

Will I have to tell you what happened to me when I apply?

No. The application is going to be on the honor system and you will not be required to discuss anything that happened to you in order to be considered as I do not want you to relive the trauma. You will be required to affirm that you identify as female, and that you have been targeted by toxic behaviors, but you will not have to discuss the specific. However, you should be prepared to discuss your goals and where you want to take your career - we're going to focus on you future, not your past.

Why only women? Don't men experience bullying and harassment too?

I thought long and hard about the question of gender in regard to The Empowerment Project because it would be wrong to say that only women experience bullying and harassment at work. Generally speaking, I don't believe that we should be creating divisions between genders - we should be looking for ways to bring everyone together. However, I believe for the success of the program, it is best limited to women for the time being.
